Picture This...

You’re on a suspension bridge, barefoot, naked…the suspension bridge is fairly narrow (about the width of your hips) and is suspended (hah! Hence the term “suspension!”) 10-miles above a ravine, at which below is a river chock full of hungry crocodiles, who are snapping their jaws and rolling around with glee at the anticipation of a tasty lunch, such as yourself, landing in their laps.

On the floorboards of the bridge lay a bed of hot, smoldering coals, as well as assorted eggshells, filled not only with sharp little blades, but active, mini-chainsaws too! Pretty kewl, eh? This is fun!

Behind you? Well, that’s the past, man. You’ve been there and done that. No sense in going back there! Ahead of you? That is once you get through the narrow, swinging in the breeze (did I tell you about the oncoming monsoon?) bridge with the hot coals, eggshells, sharp little blades and mini-chainsaws? Not to mention the delightful prospect of slipping through one of the floorboards of the bridge and falling into the happy, welcoming jaws of a ravenous crocodile! What’s on the other side of all this that could possibly be worth crossing the damn thing in the first place??? Who the fuck knows! Could be paradise up ahead. Could be hell…just a different sort. That’s the chance you take by rejecting the past, crossing the bridge, and moving forward to the other side.

What do you do? Are you feeling lucky today? Hah!

There is another choice of course…there always is. You could sprout wings and fly across the damn ravine! Sure, why not? Hey! It could happen.

The key to this entire scenario is perception. Are those really hot coals? Perhaps they’re diamonds in the buff. Hey, maybe they’re not even coals! Maybe it’s lumps of soft black licorice, lined with sparkling gold and raspberry jam! Are those egg shells really filled with sharp little blades and mini-chainsaws? Perhaps they’re filled with little chicks or duckies. You won’t really know until you make the leap…and generally things are not as bad as we first might perceive…although, to be perfectly honest, sometimes things are a lot WORSE than we initially perceive. That’s what makes life so exciting…you just never know.
